Former Oakmont High right-hander and recent Cleveland Indians draft pick Preston Guilmet made his professional debut Tuesday with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in Single A.

The pitcher, who just completed his senior year at the University of Arizona before being drafted and signed by the Indians, got the start and tossed four shutout innings. Guilmet struck out five, walked two and allowed two hits in the contest, a 7-6 Mahoning Valley win.

An interesting side note – the centerfielder for the State College Spikes, the Single A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, was Kyle Saukko, a 2007 Granite Bay High graduate who played one season at Sierra College in 2008 before being selected by the Pirates in last year’s draft.

Saukko was 1-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
