If your animal is hungry, Douglas Ranch Supply has it covered.
From horses to birds and felines, the Douglas Boulevard store can feed just about any critter.
Visitors who stop by the store for the first time are amazed at the array of items it carries. With dog toys, to riding pants, to a My Favorite Pony slumber party set, the store offers far more than mere ranch supplies.
Long known for supplying area ranchers with their horse and livestock needs, most people don’t know that dog food is one of the store’s top-selling items.
“We sell over 75 brands of dog food – we surprise people with our variety of products,” said store owner, Craig Lyman.
Lyman and his wife, Dee Dee, may still feel a little surprised themselves. Though the supply store has been around for three decades, the couple has only been in the business for a short time.
The Lymans came from the world of finance – careers in the mortgage industry to be exact. But even before major signs of trouble in the industry, they knew they wanted out.
“We had previously lived in Lincoln,” Dee Dee Lyman said.
The couple had lived in Oregon for a number of years and decided it was time to get back to the area they knew and loved — so they sold their home and came back to Northern California.
“We decided, ‘let’s buy a business,’” Dee Dee Lyman said. “We used to shop at Douglas Ranch Supply because I’d had horses when I was younger. We literally picked the store, and bought it before we’d even found a place to live.”
Since the couple purchased the store more than two years ago, their vision for the place keeps getting bigger.
“This place has quadrupled in size since the ‘80s,” Craig Lyman said, citing the number of customers in the store has increased substantially each year the couple has been at the helm.
But just because the Lymans are new to the pet food business doesn’t mean they aren’t knowledgeable.
“We’ve had a lot of training. Food reps visit us, and teach our employees about feed — about the differences, how to read the labels. We read a ton of books,” Craig Lyman said. “We know how various foods can make a difference in a pets’ coat, in their energy levels. We help breeders, we help people with show cats.”
But animal owners aren’t the only people who benefit from the Lymans’ devotion to customers and the community.
A recent recipient of the BECOME (Business Education and Community Organized to Maximize Education) Award, the couple couldn’t be more proud, and more committed to being a good business partners in the community.
Nominated for the award by Eureka Union School District, the couple spends countless hours giving back to area schools, as both business sponsors and as parent volunteers.
“We are a big supporter of ESF, of the Country Faire, and also Granite Bay High School’s Industrial Arts class,” Craig Lyman said.
Whether it’s manual labor, or loaning bales of hay for an event, Douglas Ranch Supply and its employees are ready to assist kids and the community.
“We do 10 parades a year,” Craig Lyman said. The company’s trucks are in hot demand. “It’s been really fun. Customers ask us because we have a great trailer and truck for it.”
The couple also sponsors soccer teams, helps with 4H and Future Farmers of America events, cuts Greenhills’ lawn for jogathons, and even sells products manufactured in Granite Bay High School’s Industrial Arts class in the store.
“If you’re in a community, you should support the community, that’s just what you should do,” Craig Lyman said.
Dee Dee Lyman agreed.
“We’re so excited about the lifestyle change, and the schools have been instrumental in supporting us,” she said. “It’s obvious, people really do want to help the small businesses.”
