Lemonade stand was life lesson

On Jan. 24, a rainy Sunday morning, my two boys, Brandon (age 9) and Trevor (age 6) decided they wanted to have a lemonade stand to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake.

They had previously done this for the Hurricane Katrina victims, however, that was a hot day in August and the lemonade was enticing.

On this rainy morning, Brandon and Trevror diligently created several signs, made the lemonade, and carted everything down to the street corner (including a tent to keep Mom dry while supervising).

Most of the time, they stood on the corner without an umbrella, trying to attract the attention of busy drivers focusing on a million things they probably need to get done.

Even in the rain, the boys managed to earn $232.89. The generosity of people was heartwarming. Several drivers stopped with tears in their eyes and simply handed over a $20 bill, not even asking for lemonade or cookies.

My children learned a great lesson standing out in the rain that morning — that sometimes, a small sacrifice can not only help the intended recipients, but can also inspire people to do good themselves.

If two young boys are willing to stand in the rain to raise money, what are us adults willing to do? All money raised was given to the Red Cross.
