Woodcreek girls’ run ends in San Jose
An early lead did not translate into a win Thursday night for the Woodcreek High girls basketball team.
The Lady Timberwolves were in San Jose to take on one of the Bay Area’s private school powerhouses in a Northern California quarterfinal, and after jumping to a 7-2 lead out of the gate, fell to Presentation High 65-42.
Woodcreek, the No. 11 seed, was hurt by first half foul trouble to senior forward Jennifer Judge and also by trouble at the charity stripe. The Timberwolves hit just 10-of-20 free throws before intermission and played most of the second quarter without Judge, but trailed by just 10 points at the break.
Maya Cabiness did all that she could do to keep her team within striking distance, with 13 of her 19 points coming in the opening half.
It was in the third stanza, when the Panthers scored 25 points, that the game got away. We got some things going in the third offensively, but so did they,” said Woodcreek coach Ray Beck. “J.J. had nine in the third, but we just couldn’t close the gap and they finished the third out with a run as they put 25 points on the board.”
For the game, the Timberwolves hit just 17-of-32 free throws. Cabiness’ 19 points led the way, and Beck was pleased that his team turned the ball over just 15 times against a very aggressive press.
Cabiness had five steals and sophomore reserve forward Destiny Standifer pulled down eight boards. Judge scored 12 points.
“I’m proud of how we hung in there; and though we lost, it was in a battle to a good team,” Beck said. “I can’t stress how proud I am of all the girls and what they accomplished as a team.”
