Gang member gets 14 years
A gang member who fled from Roseville police and then dropped a loaded gun from his pocket will spend the next 14 years in prison, according to a Placer County District Attorney’s Office press release. Placer County Superior Court Judge Mark S. Curry gave David Michael Perez, 32, of Rio Linda the prison term after he pled no contest to four felony charges and three misdemeanor counts. The sentence stemmed from a June 12 traffic stop in which the defendant was the passenger. After being stopped, Perez got out of the car on the Sierra Street Bridge and ran away, according to prosecutor Stephanie Macumber of the Placer District Attorney’s office. Officials said Perez fled from officers. He then jumped on the hood of a parked car, denting it, and a loaded handgun fell out of his pocket. Perez was eventually captured with help from the Roseville Police Department’s canine unit. A validated, active gang member, Perez had prior convictions and was not allowed to possess a handgun, Macumber said in the press release. Perez entered a plea July 21 of no contest to the felony charges, which included carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, street terrorism and vandalism. He also pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor charges of resisting or obstructing peace officers and one other misdemeanor count of carrying a loaded firearm. Additionally, Perez didn’t contest special allegations of having prior felony offenses. Perez now has two felony strikes on his criminal record.
