Auburn Police and Placer Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for a man who reportedly robbed a bank late Friday morning.

The man appears to be in his 70s, and was last seen wearing a long-sleeved red shirt, glasses and a black Raiders baseball cap. The man appears to have white hair.

The man allegedly stole an undisclosed amount of money from the Bank of America on High Street in Downtown Auburn.

Officer Dale Hutchins, of the Auburn Police Department, said Friday morning the man could be armed.

“There was no gun at the scene,” Hutchins said. “I don’t know if he had a gun, but he said he had a gun.”

Auburn Police Capt. John Ruffcorn said a tracking device was being used to find the man, but he couldn’t comment on how it could be attached to the man or the money.

A Placer County Sheriff’s helicopter responded to the neighborhood of Gold Street and Belmont Drive, but left to an undisclosed area around 12:30 p.m.

Officers and deputies continued to search for the man near Belmont Drive and Woodcrest Way Friday afternoon.

Around six or seven units in total from both agencies were still searching the neighborhood early Friday afternoon.

Laura Almanzan, who lives in the area, said she initially thought the search could have to do with a missing person in the canyon, but then police showed her the bank surveillance photo of the alleged robber.

“We did not recognize him,” Almanzan said. “It got my attention, but that’s about it. It gives me a little concern.”

As of late afternoon Friday, Auburn Police reported finding the tracking device in the canal in the area of Belmont Drive and Agard Street.
