Oakmont's Michael Garrison (6) tries to turn the corner against Foothill's Joe Hamblen (21) on Friday night.

Things started with a bang at Oakmont High School and it didn’t slow down Friday night against Foothill, which posted a 39-26 victory over the Vikings in their season opener.

Both teams scored in the first 36 seconds of the game. Foothill (1-1) received the kickoff and on first down found the end zone as Terrell Corbett ran 89 yards.

Oakmont’s Justin Caliste returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards to tie the score 7-7.

Halfway through the quarter, Corbett tallied his second score on a 20-yard run for a 13-7 Foothill edge.

Oakmont evened the score on a 29-yard touchdown run by Jordan Harris.

Foothill broke the draw on an eight-yard Devonte Bond run. Despite another missed extra point, the Mustangs took a 13-10 lead with 6:16 left in the first quarter.

Oakmont found its rhythm in the second quarter and put up two scores. A Foothill miscue allowed the Vikings to recover a fumble on the Mustangs’ 5-yard line. Harris ran for the score and a 20-19 lead with 7:39 left in the half.

Caliste later fielded a Foothill punt and streaked 55 yards for his second touchdown return and a 26-19 advantage with 5:41 left in the half. Oakmont wouldn’t score again.

“We’re better than that,” Oakmont coach Tim Moore said. “We’re way better. … We had our moments. We looked really good at times, and other times we let it get the best of us.”

Foothill got some air time with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Cheapell Morris to Kelly Bender. Corbett ran for a two-point conversion to give Foothill a 27-26 lead with 5:30 left in the third. Just over two minutes later, Michael Franklin intercepted Ryan Shields’ pass for a 58-yard pick six.

Corbett scored his third touchdown on a 40-yard run to finish the Vikings with 2:38 left in the game and the 39-26 final.

Corbett tallied 296 yards and three touchdowns.

“He’s a great back. We knew he’s a great back,” Foothill coach Allen Berg said. “He’s fast, strongest kid on the team. He works harder than anybody else.”
