'Impeach Obama' campaign display raises support, hackles in Auburn
LaRouche committee representatives in Auburn to raise funds, votes for write-in congressional candidate Summer Shields
Two San Francisco congressional election volunteers’ “Impeach Obama” message, complete with a poster depicting the president along with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid each wearing a Hitler mustache, generated a lot of interest — both pro and con — in Downtown Auburn Tuesday. John Craig and Dash Lea set up a booth on the corner of High Street and Kenmass to sign up supporters and collect donations for write-in candidate Summer Shields, who’s running against Pelosi. “Everywhere we go people are like the French Revolution,” Craig said. “It’s very tumultuous. Sometimes they support us. Sometimes they don’t. But there’s a lot of emotion.” The Auburn stop was part of a nationwide LaRouche Political Action Committee effort in support of three LaRouche candidates, Craig said, adding that he and Lea are taking their display to various towns in the area. Across High Street, Auburn resident Will McElroy provided a counterpoint, waving two hand-drawn cardboard signs reading, ‘There might be terrorists across the street,” and “Give ignorance a chance by checking out the booth across the street.” McElroy, who had several friends sitting in the shade behind him, described Craig and Lea as hustlers. “They’re trying to get votes for Shields under the pretext of impeaching Obama,” he said. The 22-year-old Sacramento State University student, just back from Burning Man, said he believes the president needs more time in office for things to improve. “There’s probably a lot of corruption he has to deal with,” he said. “He’s trying to get around that and trying to do something good.” One of his friends, Alexander Conheim, took exception to portraying Obama with a Hitler mustache. “It’s disrespectful,” he said. “You’re bringing back the concept of an evil dictator and an evil man. … I think it’s good that people are expressing their opinions. That’s a positive thing. But associating Obama with Hitler — that’s too much.” At the Shields booth, Craig and Lea were attracting a lot of supporters for their cause, including Tabitha Yates and her father, Henry, of Auburn. “I think Obama should be impeached,” Tabitha Yates said. “I lost my job. I think he had something to do with it." Amalya Goldman, 19, a 2009 Placer High graduate, said she and her friends supported Obama during the election, but not anymore because they’re not seeing the changes he promised. She’s particularly discouraged about the job situation, saying she’s tried unsuccessfully to find work for two years. “I’ve been looking (for a job) all day and it’s impossible,” she said. “Obama’s promising jobs, so where’s my job?” By about 1:30 p.m., interest in the booth waned as the afternoon heat increased. But Craig was pleased with the local response. He acknowledged he had successfully collected some donations for his candidate, although he declined to say how much.
