Granite Bay soccer routs Davis, moves to No. 5 in national poll
Get out of the way of Granite Bay. The varsity soccer team outscored four opponents 24-0 to win the third annual Bay City Invitational last weekend in Santa Rosa. The Grizzlies then raised their record to 7-0 by pounding perennial power Davis 4-1 on Tuesday in Davis. The Grizzlies (7-0) are ranked fifth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 1 in the West region. Jesuit is No. 3 and Davis is No. 6. Connor Hallisey broke a 1-1 tie with a goal three minutes into the second half. Tommy Thompson and Ty Thompson also scored for Granite Bay in the second half, and Cody Giddings scored the first goal. Last weekend, Granite Bay defeated host Santa Rosa 2-0 in the championship match of the Bay City Invitational. Hallisey scored in the first half, and Tommy Thompson headed in a crossing shot by Connor Puhala for the other goal. Granite Bay held the Panthers (5-2) to one shot on goal. Santa Rosa was 20-4-2 in 2009 and won the North Bay League. Hallisey, a senior midfielder, led the Grizzlies with five goals. Giddings and Tommy Thompson scored four goals each. Ben Steinher scored three and Kendall Modiste two. Granite Bay opened by beating Head Royce of Oakland 10-0. The Grizzlies didn’t allow the Jayhawks a shot on goal. Granite Bay followed with a 9-0 shutout of Marin Catholic of Kentfield, as Hallisey recorded a hat trick and Kevin Hollingshead had three saves. The Grizzlies also defeated Maria Carrillo of Santa Rosa 3-0 behind the defensive play of senior Nico Mamone. Woodland 1, Woodcreek 0 – The host Timberwolves (1-2) had the wind at their backs and dominated the second half but missed several close chances to tie the score. Woodland scored with three minutes left in the first half.
Boys water polo Oakmont 11, Del Oro 8 – Drew Wixon scored four goals and Taylor Nordell had three goals and an assist as the host Vikings (3-0) remained unbeaten Tuesday. Nicholas Miller had two goals and an assist, Steven Barocio scored twice, and Jared Codina had an assist for Oakmont. Great passing by shallow-end goalie Austin Call (six blocks, three assists) and deep-end goalie Greg Mattos (five blocks, three assists) helped the Vikings score six counter-attack points.
High school volleyball Roseville tied for ninth place out of 36 teams in the High Sierra Invitational last weekend in Reno. Setter Kali Lauhon had an outstanding tournament, and Erika Paleny’s hitting and blocking in the front row led the Tigers, who fought fatigue while playing seven matches in two days to earn one of their highest finishes in the tournament in several years, according to coach Ron Grove. Roseville (2-2) lost at Rio Americano on Tuesday 25-20, 25-23, 25-19. Simone Durham had five kills and five blocks, Abbey Wade had four kills and three blocks, and Allison Campbell had six digs. The Tigers couldn’t hold a 5-0 lead in the second game. “We need to improve consistency of execution to play the way we need to play,” coach Ron Grove said. “We have good moments but need to have more."
