Candidates talk issues over breakfast

Doug Ose, R-Sacramento, address the crowd Thursday morning during the Auburn Chamber?s Eggs & Issues candidate forum and breakfast at the Holiday Inn as fellow candidate Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, looks on.

District 4 Republican congressional candidates sparred about issues over eggs and orange juice in Auburn Thursday morning during a chamber breakfast and candidate forum.

Candidates Suzanne Jones, a Citrus Heights attorney, and Doug Ose, a former District 3 Repre-sentative, answered questions from a group of more than 50 attendees for nearly an hour on issues ranging from tax policy to illegal immigration at the Holiday Inn. Candidates Theodore Terbolizard, a fifth-generation Northern Californian, and state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, attended the early morning forum, but had to leave early due to other commitments.

Democratic challenger Charlie Brown didn’t attend because he was at another event in the district.

The seat is being vacated by Rep. John Doolittle, R-Roseville, who said in January he would not seek a 10th term in Congress.

During opening statements, candidates expressed their reasons for running.

Terbolizard said if elected, he would remain accessible to constituents.

“As a representative, I think you need someone you can feel like you can talk to,” Terbolizard said. “I’ll be accessible. If you ever want to talk to me about any issue, just send me an e-mail, give me a call.”

Ose and McClintock set the tone in their opening statements with familiar attacks — Ose on McClintock’s Southern California roots and inappropriate acceptance of state per diem payments and McClintock on Ose’s alleged “liberal” voting record.

“I’m the guy from Northern California,” Ose said. “I have spent my entire adult life investing in this community. My opponent has spent his entire adult life representing Southern California.”

McClintock said Ose has been one of the more liberal Republicans during his six years in Con-gress.

“Who do you trust to uphold the conservative principles and values of the people of this district?” McClintock asked.

Jones criticized the other candidates for their emphasis on endorsements and listing of accom-plishments.

“I am suspicious when anyone has to tell me what a good job they are doing,” Jones said. “If they are truly good at what they do, then their actions should speak for themselves.”

Jones also made a light reference to the intentions of other candidates’ for running.

“I am not running because I need a job, I have a full-time job,” Jones said. “I am unhappy with the status quo. I have more than three decades of experience in every level of management. I have done more than sit in the Capitol or run for office.”

During the question-and-answer period, Jones and Ose set their views on illegal immigration, tax policy, the war in Iraq and the Auburn dam.

Both candidates said they supported the Auburn dam for recreational, flood control and hydroelec-tric power purposes.

Both also said they didn’t think President George Bush’s Economic Stimulus package was the best method to help stimulate the economy.

“I think it is kind of a joke,” Jones said. “I think what we should have done is reduce the tax rate by 5 percent for one year. That would have left us more money in our pocketbooks.”

Ose called the package a “Band-Aid.”

“We could have taken the same amount of money (spent on stimulus checks) and increased our drilling efforts or the size of (oil) refineries and that would have given us a weekly stimulus ( lower gas prices).”

During closing statements, Ose said no one will work harder than him to represent District 4 voters.

“I am the Energizer Bunny of getting things done,” Ose said. “Nobody will work harder on your behalf.”

Jones concluded by saying that voters need new representation in Congress.

“I am the perspective of a middle-class, tax-burdened private citizen,” Jones said. “I think being a career politician is truly the obstacle to being a representative.”

Jones is starting to sound like someone I might consider voting for. As long as the old farts at the local GOP don't endorse her, she's got my vote.

"Terbolizard said if elected, he would remain accessible to constituents." - Now, to visit him do we go to Placer County Jail or Nevada County Jail?

Has he stood trial yet or did he just plead guilty to drunk driving?

So they did not comment on the California Supreme's creating a new law that allows homosexuals to marry?

Reading about the decision, it seems that polygamy and incest are right around the corner as they essentially said that the state cannot restrict marriage to any particular class of people and people are allowed to define their own classes now.

Question: If two brothers live together and one has a job with great benefits while the other has no job, can they marry so the two can share access to the benefits? If not, why not? What aspect of the Cal Supreme Law would restrict them?

This is an interesting bunch: McClintock attacking Ose for accepting farm subsides of over $600,000 while he was serving in the Congress on the committee that approves the subsides; and Ose attacking McClintock for accepting the highest amount of housing subsides given in California while living in two different houses, one in Southern California and one in Northern California. Seems to me both are masters of working the system and bilking the voters. What you have here are two career political carpetbaggers afflicted with the political disease of business as usual. .

And how could you vote for a guy named "Turbo" who raises his campaign funding by playing bars in Nevada City and who has been hauled up on DUI charges. Is he really just trying to get PR for his band? because I don't think he's really working for the welfare for the people.

In my mind, it only leaves one person to carry the message of change to Washington, Suzanne Jones. Someone who hasn't attained the status of political hack like McClintock and Ose. And, someone who truly wants to bring change to the current lobbyist run federal government.

2049er, I started taking a good look at Jones, liked what I heard until it came to the Auburn Dam, she lost my vote on that one. Hopefully she changes her position.

Please leave the canyon alone.

loomisresident, So Jones lost your vote on the Auburn Dam issue--what a strange 1-issue issue to make as a deal-breaker--especially since it won't get built regardless of who wins--if Auburn Dam fanatic Dolittle couldn't get it moving, I doubt that anyone new will.

The Auburn Dam is a non-issue and has been determined to be too expensive to build; We must accept that truth; perhaps Suzanne Jones was telling you how she feels about the project and not what you want to hear like the other political slickers...I find a true opinion refreshing from a politician? If you want change, I think she warrants your consideration.

McClintock asked -- Who do you trust to uphold the conservative principles and values of the people of this district?

The people of this district are hard working and honest people. Our past congressman said he had conservative principles....and then his wife took over $126,000 of his campaign funds in a single election.......it was all legal...... I'm tired of "conservatives" asking the middle class people of this district to pay for McClintock's $300,000 extra OVER his $116,000 / yr........and Ose's land developing and insurance company friends tell us we have to pay higher FEES and premiums so they can throw big campaign parties and then take it OFF their tax debit.

I think the big business (not our little stories) need to pay their fair share. WE ARE! Our soldiers in Iraq and the local property owners who live in their house in the district need someone to speak for them.........We should NOT have to $300,000 to a lobbyist to speak for us.....our vote alone should give us a voice!

Well, I think my mind is getting close to being made up...... the Ose-McClintock dual has suggested to me that it may be time to vote non Republican in this one. Experience or not, Charlie Brown is beginning to look like the best possible representative for this community. Where is Mike Holmes when we need him. The GOP committee sure blew this one..... what were they thinking??
