Cobra sweep propels team into playoffs
Young stymies Vipers in opener
Staff Report

Former Granite Bay pitcher Nick Young goes into his delivery during a 5-1 win over El Dorado Hills on Sunday.

The Sacramento Cobras, a Nor-Cal Semi-Pro baseball team with a host of Roseville-area players on its roster went into Sunday’s season-final doubleheader against the El Dorado Hills Vipers needing a clean sweep to have any hopes of a playoff berth. But that’s exactly what the Cobras received, winning the first game 5-1, behind pitcher Nick Young (Granite Bay HS, UC San Diego). Young worked the first five innings, allowing only one run on two hits. Offensively, Josh Dawson (Granite Bay HS, Mesa College) was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

In the second game, the Cobras romped, winning the contest 11-5. Jameel Ziadeh (Granite Bay HS, American River College) was an excellent 4-for-5, with two runs scored.

“We’re in two tough leagues (Nor-Cal Semi-Pro Conference and Sierra Baseball League) and none of the 47 games we’ve played in the last two months has been easy,” Cobras manager Mike Breining said. “The guys knew they had to win yesterday to get into the playoffs and I’m proud of the way they have stayed focused though out the season and took care of business when they had to win.”

Cobra notes:

The Cobras next travel to Baylands Park in Palo Alto for the start of the AABC Stan Musial 2008 State Playoffs. Sacramento will be matched up against the Palo Alto Oaks, on Friday morning, with the winner advancing to a second-round game against the Novato Knicks that afternoon.
