NEW COUNCIL WILL BRING THE 'RIGHT' CHANGE
Posted by: louisev
Rocklin's ANGELA TORRENS spoke Wednesday at Whitney High School

Rocklin's Chamber of Commerce hosted a quality evening on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Whitney High School for local candidates.

The candidates for Rocklin City Council spoke last and spoke to the hearts of most of those in attendance. High on their minds: What will happen to Rocklin, given all the retail vacancies, the near-blighted downtown core and the declining sales tax dollars and developer fees?

More aptly: Why didn't the current council plan better?

Consider this statement from the longest member of the council Peter Hill in today's Placer HERALD: “We’ve saved money in the good years; I want to continue that,” Hill said. “With the downturn in the economy, we have to be very careful in our spending.”

Hill was pleased that Rocklin received Family Circle Magazine’s distinction as one of the “10 Best Towns” in America.

What about the bad years, Mr. Hill? My family plans for the inevitable bad times. Why hasn't the city?

Rocklin voters need to see the whole picture. The real picture. As far as the Family Circle 'paragraph' story, this is a PR gig - - Family Circle will praise any and all communities. It's not a biggie. What about MONEY magazine that also published last month and did not include Rocklin as a Top 100 for populations 50,000 and under? Roseville made that list!

Consider the two candidates who have strong answers for what Rocklin needs to do in the way of change: Angela Torrens and David Nelson.

Both candidates realize that the downtown core needs to become a destination and both have plans to begin to help Rocklin move in this direction.

Imagine that! A downtown center for Rocklin and her

visitors.

There are other topics voters can imagine: no lawsuits from neighboring cities, an approachable council, better traffic flow through the city, attention to Senior services, such as busing and transportation...the list is long and the time is short.

VOTE FOR ANGELA Torrens and DAVID Nelson.

I guess, once again, I don't understand louisev or her logic, but she doesn't think it necessary to make sense as long as she is shilling for her candidates. If the city has saved money in good years to use in bad years, what is wrong with that? Sounds to me like a reasonable thing to do, if you have the money to save. I suppose you would do what the jerks in DC and Sacramtomato do, spend everything they can get their hands on and then borrow more.

As far as the magazine award, I thought it nice. And louisev, neither Rocklin or Roseville could be on a Money magazine list of best towns or cities under 50,000 because they both have populations over 50,000.

You and the others so taken by the two challengers seem to forget that there are some people in Rocklin with an IQ above room temperature.

Poor George. Fever, perhaps? A little under the weather?

You're right to correct me on the MONEY magazine demographic stat: The award went to communities 50,000 to 100k. My bad, as the young folks say. Anyway, MONEY magazine has quite a bit more heft than Family Circle, but you're right, it was, "nice."

Trouble is, we need more than NICE in Rocklin right now. You're probably unaware of huge fissures just under the surface of the demeanor at city hall. Tsk. Tsk. Tsk.

No, I'm not a free spender. But, I am a planner and the current council should have planned better. The economy has been showing storm clouds for a long time, now. And, to think the city just spent $25,000 on a glitzy mailer??????? Give that money to the city employees!

Downtown redevelopment....Look George: This isn't rocket science! A 40 year redevelopment plan has to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for absurd city planning.

This is why we need to vote for only two this election: Angela Torrens and David Nelson. The symbols of a better Rocklin.

How can anyone compare the beauty of what Rocklin was to what it is now and call it "planning" at all? It was simply one developer after another talking to one councilman after another for literally decades (possibly evenn viiolating the Brown Act in "serial talks"--not allowed) and deciding what was in store for Rocklin. Like kids with their hands in the cookie jar, the incumbents only saw upfront dev fees; they could not see the residual impacts after those fees are used up.

Some think property taxes will cover Rocklin's nose dive. Doubt it since only about 7% goes to Rocklin, and even that may be cut. But while the going was good, some very lucrative "deals" were made; some folks came out on top, and now some others are hurting.

This is a city run for, by, and of developer pawns. Whether it's naivate or corruption, we'll probably never know. But we do know that when anyone has been in as long as Rocklin incumbents and made such a mess of a once-gorgeous city, it's time for a change. Why hasn't Rocklin planned for public transportation instead of making the city car dependent? Angela Torrens will turn Rocklin in the right direction.

There comes a time when the "Over the Hill Gang" needs to retired and new blood and vision replace them. I have a problem with the lack of any ( I guess there is Dial-A-Ride) public transportation. I still see planning in Rocklin, and the surrounding area, based on continuing the concrete/asphalt/car system. This has got to change. It uses to much land, creates too much pollution, noise and congestion, and certainly doesn't help the Global Warming situation.

I also have been looking for something in Rocklin that would attract outside visitor and their $$$. I don't see much of anything. I even find myself going outside of Rocklin for much of my shopping and almost all of my entertainment. Lots of lost/missing sales tax dollars go somewhere else. This needs to change.

I think Angela can help change this.
