Roseville Circuit City safe from chopping block
Roseville’s Circuit City appears to be safe after the electronics retailer announced plans to shutter 155 stores and lay off thousands of employees today. The store, at 10271 Fairway Drive, does not appear on the list of store closings made available on the Circuit City Web site this morning. A total of 23 California stores – none in the Sacramento region – are affected. The financially troubled company, whose 566 stores make it the nation’s No. 2 electronics retailer, also said it would attempt to renegotiate leases at some locations where stores are remaining open. “In some cases, the company may choose to negotiate with landlords to exit leases if rents are not reduced,” the company said in a news release. The Roseville location is fairly recent; the closing stores represent locations that are “underperforming,” the company said. contact the writer: nathand@goldcountrymedia.com

Well, I hope this doesn't go the way of Linnen's N' Things or Pei Wei. Both of those firms announced limited closures before deciding to shutter all their stores. In 2007, CC laid off about 3400 employees. Perhaps they can follow the lead of Kmart, who closed a number of stores but stayed in business and even eventually bought Sears. If I work for Circuit City I would not make any major purchases right now.
