The more someone subscribes to their version of the truth, the greater the need to suspect their motives. We all suffer from a perspective deficit. In my humble opinion, some more than others. An abundant exchange of opinion fills the pages of the myopolis blogs, but does this close the perspective deficit gap?
On the surface, the gap has only widened, since few honest debates occur on the most important issues. There are many debates that rage between the self-appointed thought leaders in this pseudo-community. I am certain that most of those involved are very nice people. Their passion for the issue can quickly degrade into expressions that show their disdane for opposing views. In short, those who show disdain for opposing viewpoints without any discussion, come off as intellectual snobs.
Of course, there are those who simply love the argument, even when they have no real passion for the issue. I am sure anyone who follows these pages can name names....
I read these pages to get some perspective, and sometimes I give my perspective. The recent discussions over prop 8 were probably the most intense I've seen at the AJ.
I often wish there were more people involved in these discussions. There are many wise people with different perspectives that would add flavor to these discussions, instead of the too often left extreme vs. right extreme stance. The prop 8 discussions did bring in new perspectives. I am not sure many were actually listening to the other side, as most came into the discussion with their convictions firmly in place, and only joined to expressed their indignation to the opposing camp. I think many may have used this forum as a catharsus to express such passionate held beliefs.
If this online community is to thrive, if it is to attract and retain members, it requires more perspective to balance the opinion. It requires less talking points from CNN, MSNBC or FOX News, and more original thought.
There are no absolutes in these pages; there is only the search for Truth, Justice, and the American Way.

A few months ago I wrote a blog about being "addicted" to the Auburn myopolis pages. At first I found the to and fro arguments quite interesting and engaging and I found myself bringing up the letters-to-the-editor to see the latest discussion.
However, as most novelties, I have found myself wearing thin of same old arguments. Maybe it was the intensity of the election past exchanges, but I've been less and less compelled to put my opinions out there.... I think you've hit the nail on the head, so to speak, about the lack of real exchange and discourse.
Hopefully, your blog may inspire those who judge, quickly and harshly to be more open minded to differing points of view. Thought provoking blog.
I appreciated this blog yesterday, started a post and then lost it all when my computer went temporarily belly-up.
I often think...where's the centrist view? I tire of the name calling, insults, "blah, blah, blahs", etc. I appreciate when someone disagrees with my point of view and can explain why, without resorting to calling me an idiot. I might be one, but save that for another venue. I read a lot of different perspectives, I would prefer to read personal input, not copy and paste input from today's talking heads.
My perspective is as a moderate ex-republican now a moderate independent. I changed affiliation because I don't think RINO means Republican in Name Only, but rather Religious in Numbers Only.
WOW, I agree with all of you. Thank you.
