No more bad hair days?
Sola Salon attracts steady stream to its bevy of shops
Roseville may never have a bad hair day again. After its grand opening Oct. 16, the stylists at Sola Salon have barely had a chance to catch their breaths between clients. A steady flow of customers is rare for some businesses in Roseville given the dire state of the economy, but for the ladies at Sola Salon, it comes as a shock to no one. “People really like the privacy and the fact that they really get one-on-one face time with their stylists,” said Cindy Frank, stylist and owner of De Ja’Vue, a salon within Sola Salon. The set-up at Sola Salon is unique. Within the 5,800-square-foot, industrial-looking building are more than 20 rooms ranging in size from 120 to 500 square feet that contain the individually owned salons. Frank, a stylist for more than 20 years, said she’s never been happier, because Sola Salon enables her to own her own business, without the cost and upkeep of a full-fledged salon. “It’s really a unique concept and I think it’s a more professional environment than you would find in a regular salon,” Frank said. According to property manager Wes Pierce, each of the experienced stylists rent their studio and can decorate it to their liking and run their business out of their own salon. A majority of the stylists currently operating out of Sola Salon have been in the industry for a number of years and already have well-established clientele. Mary Curtis, a Granite Bay resident, gets a wash and blow-dry from Jessica Kriedler, stylist and owner of Cosmo Chic salon, every Thursday afternoon. “She is my most loyal customer,” Kriedler said. “She’s even referred her family to me, I do the hair of all her daughters.” Liliana Utush started doing hair in the Bay Area more than 20 years ago. She moved to the Roseville area in 1986 and purchased her own salon a few years later. “When you own your own salon, you are 100 percent responsible,” Utush said. “There are so many headaches.” Utush now owns Gigi’s Studio 12 inside Sola Salon and said all of the headaches are gone. She is happy to be her own boss and employee but still have people to turn to when things get out of hand. “If I need help I can grab one of the other girls. If my sink breaks I just pick up the phone and call Wes,” Utush said. “I would never go back to owning my own salon. Why would I?” Most of the salons have only one sink, chair and dryer to maximize the one-on-one time between clients and stylists. Clients can also enjoy a glass of wine or a soft drink while they are being pampered. For those with hectic schedules, some stylists make appointments for all hours of the day. “We just take it to the next level of professionalism and customer service,” Frank said. “I think it’s just proof that when you’re happy where you are, it shows in your work.”
